The first question on people’s minds, besides ‘how to make money online’, is usually ‘how to make money on line’ AND ‘how to make a website’. People also wonder if making money online can be done with free website design sites, or, do they have to build a website using purchased software. Actually building a website can involve free website design and purchasing website design software. This article will explore both methods, and, hopefully give new folks a little more confidence if they are going to try to make money online.
My first experience with website building came from using Microsoft Publisher.
(If anyone reading this has Microsoft Office, Publisher should be bundled with the package). What I liked about using Publisher the most is that it is largely a drag and drop interface with sizable text boxes that can be placed anywhere on the web page. This makes Publisher very easy to use as far as web page design is concerned. Another feature is that Publisher comes with website templates, like many programs, so that you don’t have to start from scratch. What might make Publisher not so attractive to some is that some knowledge (and software) about FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is required for website creation. FTP is not difficult to master but is an additional step to building a website. Also required is a website host to store website files. Another problem with Publisher is that accessing the HTML (the underlying code that formats a website and how it looks) code is not easy and Publisher is also not as SEO friendly as other site design tools if your designing a website to make money on the internet. If you are looking for professional design power you might consider Adobe Dreamweaver, but beware – besides the expense of the program there will also be the task of learning Dreamweaver as well. Another possibility to make your own website would be to explore the free website building sites on the internet. Website building sites like and have free site building tools for simple designs, but also have pay packages for those needing more storage for text and video. I personally don’t care for the web design tools available at these free sites but that doesn’t mean that a person can’t build a good looking site and do it free.
The lines are getting very blurry nowadays between a blog site and a website. When I first looked into blogging I tried Google’s and found it easy to set up a blog in a very short amount of time. After a while, however, I looked into building a website that would support the affiliate programs I wanted to join. That’s when I discovered WordPress. WordPress is a powerful blog/website building tool and, like , it is free. Unlike , WordPress has a lot of support in the way of Plug-ins (small HTML or PHP programs that are free, for the most part) and widgets that doesn’t have. The disadvantage of this power is that the WordPress interface is a little more complicated and takes more time to learn before navigating it becomes easy. Of course WordPress comes with a lot of impressive templates that have a refined, polished look of professional web page design. This is important because visual appeal is paramount when customers visit your site. All in all, I like the combination of WordPress professional looking templates and the power that WordPress has to offer. If you don’t mind spending a few days getting their interface down there is no doubt that WordPress offers a lot for making money on the internet.
